“Thanks for coming with me,” Gina said to Angel as they walked hand in hand up to the LGBTQ+ Youth Center.

“Thanks for letting me,” Angel said, bumping shoulders with her.

“Suzanne is incredible and maybe some of the kids will be here. I’d love for you to meet them.”

Gina pushed the door open and held it for Angel. She looked to where four kids were sitting at a table working on a jigsaw puzzle.

“There you are.” A woman, who looked to be in her fifties, came out of an office, smiling.

“Hi Suzanne,” Gina said, returning her smile. She turned to Angel. “I’d like you to meet Angel Ruiz.”

“Hi Angel, it’s nice to meet you.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Suzanne.”

“I never know whether people want to shake hands anymore,” she said, looking from Angel to Gina.

“I know what you mean,” Angel said. “It’s fine.”

“Come in,” Suzanne said, walking back toward her office.

They followed her in and sat down.

“This is awkward and difficult to talk about, but here goes.” Gina took a deep breath. “As you know, I suffer with kidney disease and from time to time it keeps me from doing the things I love which includes coming here.”

Suzanne sat up. “Oh no. What’s happened?”

Gina appreciated her concern. “It’s progressed to the point that I need a kidney transplant.”

“Damn, Gina. I’m so sorry. What can we do?” Suzanne asked immediately.

“That’s the awkward part. Would you get tested to see if you’re a match?”

“To see if you could have my kidney? Where do I go? I’ll do it tomorrow!” Suzanne said excitedly.

“Wow!” Angel said, unable to keep quiet.

“That’s amazing, Suzanne,” Gina said appreciatively. “I can’t thank you enough.”

“Fingers crossed we match. Just in case, I’ll pass the word to all the staff and volunteers. What do I need to tell them?” she said.

“I’ll text you a link. It has all the information you need on where to go, how to schedule the test, and what happens if you match,” Gina said, her voice full of hope. She reached for her phone and sent the info to Suzanne.

“Okay. I’ll read it over and schedule a test. I really hope I match. I can’t think of anyone I’d rather give a kidney to,” she said, looking at Gina compassionately. “If you get my kidney I wonder if you’ll get some of my traits,” she said thoughtfully, looking at the ceiling. “Maybe you’ll love beer, like I do,” she said, her eyes bright.

Gina and Angel didn’t know what to say and stared at her.

Suzanne erupted in laughter. “I was just kidding,” she said, catching her breath. “You should’ve seen your faces.”

Gina shook her head and laughed with her. Soon Angel joined them.

“I think there are some people out there that would love to see you,” Suzanne said as they quieted.

“Thanks Suzanne,” Gina said, getting up. She went around and hugged the generous woman.

“It was so nice meeting you,” she said to Angel, patting her on the shoulder. “Gina will introduce you,” she said, nodding to the group at the table.
